Select the Correct DVI Configuration

DVI connectors can look similar while supporting different signals. Before requesting a quotation, buyers should identify the exact connector and signal required by both devices.

A DVI-D plug cannot transmit an analog signal. A DVI-I connector may carry both signal types, but actual compatibility still depends on the source equipment, display and adapter configuration.


Single-Link or Dual-Link?

A DVI cable manufacturer should confirm the internal wiring rather than relying only on the visible connector pins.

Single-Link DVI

Single-link DVI is suitable for many established monitor, projector and industrial display systems requiring resolutions up to approximately 1920 × 1200 at 60Hz.

It is commonly used for:

  • Standard office monitors

  • 1080p displays

  • Projectors

  • Industrial control terminals

  • Replacement cables for existing equipment

Dual-Link DVI

Dual-link DVI uses additional digital channels and should be selected when the connected equipment requires greater bandwidth or resolutions such as 2560 × 1600 at 60Hz.

A 24+1 connector should not automatically be described as dual-link unless all required signal pins are connected and the finished cable has been validated for the intended resolution.


Cable Length and Signal Stability

The required resolution and cable length should be evaluated together.

A longer cable creates greater signal loss than a short assembly. Cable gauge, conductor material, pair construction, shielding and connector termination can all affect display stability.

For longer runs or high-resolution applications, buyers should confirm:

  • Final production length

  • Required resolution

  • Conductor gauge

  • Shielding structure

  • Ferrite-core requirement

  • Equipment compatibility

  • Whether an active signal solution is necessary

  • Sample-testing conditions

Shielding and Connector Construction

A shielded DVI cable is commonly selected for office equipment, industrial systems, control rooms and installations where other power or signal cables may create electromagnetic interference.

Depending on the project, the cable structure can be evaluated for:

  • Individual signal-pair shielding

  • Aluminum-foil shielding

  • Braided overall shielding

  • Drain wire

  • Ferrite cores near one or both connectors

  • Molded connector strain relief

  • Metal internal connector protection

  • Gold- or nickel-plated contacts

  • Screw-locking connector retention

The shielding method should be defined in the approved specification. Terms such as “double shielded” are not sufficient unless the actual foil, braid and coverage requirements are recorded.


Replacement Cables for Existing Equipment

Many DVI projects involve equipment that remains in service even though newer display interfaces are available. Examples include industrial computers, medical imaging systems, test equipment, CNC controls, security monitors and commercial display installations.

For these projects, the priority is not adding the latest video standard. The priority is reproducing a cable that fits the existing equipment and maintains stable operation.

Converting DVI to Other Display Interfaces

DVI may be connected to HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA equipment, but the conversion method depends on the source signal and target interface.

DVI to HDMI

DVI-D and HDMI both carry digital video, so compatible equipment may use a passive cable or adapter. DVI does not normally carry HDMI audio, so buyers should confirm whether separate audio is required.

DisplayPort to DVI

DisplayPort-to-DVI projects may require a passive or active conversion solution depending on the source output and target display.

DVI to VGA

DVI-I may provide analog compatibility when the source supports analog output. DVI-D is digital-only and cannot be converted to VGA with a simple passive adapter.

The source and display direction should always be stated because active conversion cables may not operate in reverse.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify whether I need DVI-D or DVI-I?

Check the source and display ports, equipment manuals or connector pin layout. DVI-D supports digital signals only, while DVI-I can support digital and analog signals when the connected equipment provides both.

Does a 24+1 connector always mean dual-link?

No. The connector may have 24 digital pin positions, but the internal cable must include the required dual-link conductors. Ask for the wiring specification and resolution test results.

Can you manufacture a cable from an existing sample?

Yes. A reference sample can be evaluated for connector type, pinout, length, shielding and mechanical construction. Equipment-level testing is recommended before bulk production.

Can DVI carry audio?

Standard DVI is primarily a video interface. Some equipment configurations may pass audio through digital conversion, but this should not be assumed. Confirm the complete source and display requirements.

Can the cable length be customized?

Yes. The supported resolution and signal stability should be validated at the requested production length.

Can DVI-D connect directly to VGA?

No. DVI-D carries digital signals only. A suitable active converter is required to connect a DVI-D source to an analog VGA display.
