Select by Resolution and Cable Length

VGA is an analog video interface. The achievable image quality is influenced by the source, display, resolution, refresh rate, conductor structure, cable length and surrounding interference.

A short cable used for a standard office monitor does not require the same construction as a longer cable routed through an AV cabinet or industrial installation.

Before ordering, provide:

  • Required resolution and refresh rate

  • Final cable length

  • Source-device model

  • Monitor or projector model

  • Direct connection or extension use

  • Installation near power cables or motors

  • Required shielding

  • Ferrite-core preference

  • Expected order quantity

A VGA cable manufacturer should confirm performance at the requested production length instead of applying one general resolution claim to every length.


Why Internal Wiring Matters

A standard VGA connector has 15 pin positions, but not every low-cost cable uses the same conductor arrangement.

The RGB video channels, horizontal and vertical synchronization, grounding and identification lines should be defined according to the intended equipment. Some project cables use VGA 3+2, 3+4, 3+5 or 3+6 structures, referring to the combination of coaxial RGB channels and additional conductors.

For normal computer-monitor cables, buyers should confirm whether all required pins are connected. For industrial or replacement assemblies, provide the equipment pinout or an approved sample rather than assuming a standard wiring layout.


Shielding for Analog Signal Stability

Shielding is especially relevant to VGA because unwanted electrical interference may appear as image noise, shadowing, color distortion or reduced sharpness.

Depending on the application, the cable construction may include:

  • Individually shielded RGB coaxial conductors

  • Aluminum-foil shielding

  • Braided overall shielding

  • Drain wire

  • Shielded synchronization conductors

  • Ferrite cores at one or both ends

  • Metal connector-shell grounding

The term “shielded VGA cable” should be supported by a defined construction. The approved specification should state which shielding layers are used rather than relying only on a marketing description.

For installations close to motors, transformers, power supplies or bundled electrical wiring, provide the actual operating environment during product evaluation.


When Are Ferrite Cores Required?

Ferrite cores are commonly added near VGA connectors to reduce high-frequency common-mode interference. They may be useful for long cables, electrically noisy installations or equipment that has already shown signal-quality problems.

They are not a substitute for suitable conductors, correct grounding or effective shielding.

Buyers should consider:

  • Whether the existing cable uses ferrite cores

  • The type and location of nearby electrical equipment

  • Required cable length

  • Available space behind the source and display

  • Whether one or two ferrite cores are required

  • The outer diameter allowed by the installation

A sample should be tested with the target equipment before ferrite cores are specified for an entire bulk order.

Angled and Low-Profile Connectors

A straight VGA connector may be difficult to install behind a wall-mounted monitor, inside a machine enclosure or near a cabinet door.

Angled connectors can route the cable upward, downward, left or right, reducing rear clearance and avoiding a sharp bend immediately behind the plug.

Before requesting an angled cable, provide:

  • Viewing direction used to define the angle

  • Available rear clearance

  • Position of adjacent ports

  • Cable exit direction

  • Connector screw-access requirements

  • Installation drawing or photograph

Angle descriptions should be confirmed using a drawing because “left-angle” and “right-angle” may be interpreted differently when viewed from opposite sides.


Frequently Asked Questions

Is VGA the same as HD15 or DE-15?

These terms are commonly used for the 15-pin analog display connector. HD15 and DE-15 more specifically describe the connector form, while VGA describes the video interface and common application.

Can a VGA cable support 1080p?

A suitable cable and compatible equipment may support 1080p. Actual image quality depends on the cable length, construction, source, display and operating environment.

Does every VGA cable connect all 15 pins?

Not necessarily. Buyers requiring complete wiring or a particular pinout should state this in the purchasing specification.

Do I need ferrite cores?

Ferrite cores may help in electrically noisy environments, but they should be selected together with suitable shielding and conductor construction. Equipment-level sample testing is recommended.

Can the cable length be customized?

Yes. The required resolution and signal quality should be tested at the requested length before mass production.

Can you reproduce an existing VGA cable?
